History of Property
The iconic Grade B listed “White Tower” of Park Church is a prominent and familiar feature of Glasgow’s Park skyline. Park Church was designed by the prominent architect JT Rochead in the Gothic style and was originally constructed in 1858 to accommodate the affluent new residents of the Park area. The church was the first building to be built on the street which was originally called Park Street East when Charles Wilson’s original Masterplan was being constructed westward from Woodside Crescent and Woodside Terrace in the 1830’s.
The iconic spire rivals the adjacent tripartite towers of the Free Church College and Church on Lynedoch Street (later known as Trinity College) which draws on the more restrained Roman neo-classical influence for its features.
The main body of the church including nave, transepts and chancel were demolished in 1968 due to rising maintenance costs coupled with dwindling church attendances, leaving only the iconic tower remaining. The site was then redeveloped to incorporate the remaining tower in the late 1960’s to form office accommodation for the Bank of Scotland. The redesign was developed in the brutalist concrete style prominent in the 1960’s and was widely criticised for its exposed concrete finish which contrasted to the fine ashlar of the adjoining streets.
In 2008 The Bank of Scotland vacated the premises and the site was purchased by NOAH City Developments who commissioned RMJM Architects to create 50 new apartments with new rooftop penthouses and private underground car parking.
The original building envelope was completely remodelled to current Building Regulations requirements for insulation, sound etc through the use of honed Jura limestone and zinc cladding. The upper storeys and penthouses at the new sixth floor level were designed to take advantage of panoramic views across Glasgow.
